As the old song goes: "...don't take me half the way." I concur that Alford has not reached the levels fair fans [those that did not want him lynched on Day 1] have expected him to reach. That is the given half.
Ahhh, the second half. Who do you think is: 1) available; 2) willing to come to Westwood, and 3) a marked improvement over Alford?
Coaches now build teams knowing that star players have every incentive to leave early and the program to give those players early exposure to the NBA cannot but expedite the exodus. As it stands now, virtually every Bruin who demonstrates early promise cannot escape (even if they wanted to) the hustlers, pimps and benefactors urging the kid to leave early.
I believe that UCLA may be the worst coaching job in the country given the location (big city, many pro teams), too many kids leaving too early and the expectations of some fans fooling themselves by basking in the now long-extinguished cinders of glory which was achieved long before they were born.
