Ridiculous. LiAngelo Ball and Jalen Hill were not going to play much. Cody Riley in maybe 20 minutes a game at the most would not have made a difference as a freshman who hadn't learned how to play defense yet and you don't even know how good a defensive player he is. Nothing I've seen of him indicates he's a good rim protector. That's a big assumption on your part.
But here is the problem with Alford and defense. They have an open practice for donors before every season. That combined with a few times each year I drop in on a practice makes one thing clear. Alford spends a lot of practice time on shooting drills. Now that is certainly important, but an inefficient use of practice time. Players can practice shooting on their own, but can't practice team and individual defense. Howland spent a huge amount of his practices on those factors and it showed.
