This past season was Wagner's junior year. You may not remember him 3 years ago, but that is part of the point: he was an obscure Euro prospect that did not get to play very much his freshman year, who took 3 years to develop into the player that was drafted by the Lakers in the first round.
BTW, after last season, Wolverine fans were sweating it out, wondering whether Wagner would stay in the draft due to some NBA team giving him an indication that they would draft him based on potential. But he stayed another year (as other UM players had before him) because he was enjoying the experience and was confident that he was continuing to develop in a way that promised to get him where he wanted to go in life.
And, clearly, Wagner's decision was key to Michigan being able to win the Big Ten tournament and then make a deep NCAA tournament run.
