As for Alford, it is really hard, I think, for anyone to put their finger directly on the answer of "is he or isn't he". On paper, he's been a good recruiter. That said, so many issues (some CSA had control over, others he did not, and still others it's ambiguous how much control he did or should have had).
Mostly, each year, we're expected to grant patience due to what are (again, on paper) expectations of high potential. And, this might be the year he overcomes that. OR, it may be just another year where we underachieve.
Whichever it is, Alford has been given a lot of leeway, and IMO too much credit for great recruiting classes that for one reason or another have not panned out.
I thought he needed an Elite 8 or better with the Ball team. But, that did not happen, and he's still here. Some of that was due to the strong recruiting class last year. But neither 5 star played like a 5 star, and we all know about the sunglasses ;-)
This year is another year that could be great, or awful, depending upon:
-- How well do Wilkes and Hands step it up in their second year?
-- How will Ali step it up?
-- How quickly can the large and strong recruiting class contribute consistently at a D1 level, across all 5 positions?
-- How well can CSA develop this team through the season?
-- Can we figure out how to win on the road with this team?
-- Will we stay relatively injury free?
-- Can we play in the paint?
-- Etc, etc.
With the likelihood of another strong recruiting class next year, if Alford has a mediocre year, will he again be a paper lion?
