I’m not sure this is accurate anymore

I’m gonna stick to hoop because football is apple to oranges. The game has changed and I think the top programs who have established coaches need to have succession plans. This means a trusted assistant who is oftentimes an alum/ex player. It seems to have worked for UNC and Duke. In todays environment you oftentimes have massive buyouts for coaches that one might find desirous. I’d draw a slightly finer distinction between “superstar” ex player like Patrick Ewing, Penny and Howard and a Mark Pope/Scheyer type. The Superstar is who is stay away from. I think they typically fail because 99% of these type of players can’t relate to all the other players. Things came more naturally to them and it doesn’t translate.

The other thing to keep in mind is that so many coaches are already paid so well, does an extra million make a real difference? Hurley making 7mm is Storrs probably isn’t swayed as much by 10-11mm/ year, especially with the additional pressure.

Dont be surprised when UCLA’s next hoops head coach is Earl Watson.
