Walkons and local recruiting have been important to Utah since the Rick Majerus days.
I once had the opportunity to speak with Majerus about his ideas on roster construction, and he very strongly believed that the back end of his bench should be occupied by local players who were not talented enough to think that they should be challenging for big rotation minutes. Such players should understand that they are on the roster to practice, make their more talented teammates better, get good grades to raise the team GPA, add to local fan support, and, most of all, not make trouble.
The closely knit Utah basketball community does not produce many high end D1 prospects, but it can and does contribute to support for the local university basketball programs. Local players, many of whom are walkons, are a key connection for Utah.
