Timing is important as you point out. Early calls just to show

the teams that you want to control the game are often made but usually that hurts one team or another and isn't something that was taught to the officials when I was doing a little "moonlighting" as a basketball official. I was a member of the New Mexico officials association for 5 years when stationed at Walker AFB in Roswell. Any senior officials (including a couple of NBA officials) I've had discussions with and any officials clinic I've ever attended, the primary area stressed was becoming an expert on the rules and developing consistency in calling the game. It was never taught to call things tighter at the beginning just to let the players know "who is the boss". Knowing the rules (in detail) and consistency in calling was always the points stressed most with emphasis on letting the players decide the outcome of the game.
