There are two ways ''academics'' matter for transfers

I think. Even at UCLA -

1. If the "student-athlete" is NOT in good academic standing at their present institution of higher learning; or

2. If she/he is a prospective Graduate Transfer.

Otherwise, an undergrad student-athlete in good standing at their present school should not have an issue being admitted to UCLA, if the coach wants them.

(As an aside, I always thought this was a major reason Chip preferred transfers to high school recruits - he knew that in most cases, he wouldn't have any troublle getting them in.)
