you are right. Did you see Coach Wright after the game on the analysis segment? He said Kentucky has more players that will be successful in the NBA but today they are not better college players than Oakland's. He was making the same point - it's really hard for a team of freshmen to win because it takes time to learn and develop the skills you need to succeed at the college level.
The comment has been made about lower division schools having the experience advantage over the major schools - not the same le el of talent but their players stick it out and play four years rather than leaving after one or two. We saw both ends of that equation the last two years
