iirc giving up on Tyger was a late decision. As to the portal, when the really top candidates hit the portal the competition is fierce. As time passes, the quality is less and less. Do you take a guy whose shooting would help your team but who really wouldn't allow you to do what you want as a team? Do you take a guy whose defense would help inside but who has no offensive game outside of two feet from the hoop - where your center needs to be to be effective?

You say he had plenty of time to recruit guys. But Tyger didn't have to give anyone six months notice In fact, my impression is that Tyger was busy exploring options and thinking about his situation - and finally decided he needed to move on from college. (I remember a similar thought process myself as no doubt do many others.) AND the issue is not how much time Mick had to recruit but rather his valuation of needs and the players who were available at the time.

As Phil points out, first they have to qualify to get past UCLA admissions. And that's not the same thing as qualifying to get into SC or Washington State or Ohio State or - continue the list.

Not a matter of making excuses for Cronin, merely of understanding the circumstances and trying to understand what his thinking may have been.

And I don't get your last comment - about that only making sense considering two guys. I was merely commenting that in EACH of those two reported situations, the HC decided - again, reportedly - that the HC decided the price was too high. I was saying it's all relative but it STARTS with a complete understanding of how much NIL money you have on hand and how much you might be able to raise additionally for a given player. It involves how much every player on your team is making and how each might react not just to having someone brought in to play his position but also how much that player is being paid to do so. It's all connected, all a whole. You have to get this.

The talent in the portal today is NOT going to be the same as talent in the portal as the NIT and NCAA tournaments wrap up and all those players start looking ahead to the future. It changes.

As to the foundation they get playing for Mick Cronin, start with defense of course but ask the Miami Heat what they think about the foundation Jaime Jaquez came to the NBA with, Jaylen Clark got drafted as a junior despite an inability to even begin to play for another year after the draft.
