If an ex player, from any level, isn't a good/great teacher

and very importantly, a good communicator, he isn't going to last or be a successful coach. And next is recruiting skills and being able to evaluate and identify legitimate talent. That's a must for coaches today. Unfortunately, not all players, NBA or otherwise, have these inherent talents.

In addition with today's NIL and Portal situation to deal with, a coach will also have to be a good manager/planner to keep the team on solid ground from year to year. The NIL and Portal requires a lot more advanced thinking and planning from coaches than it did for them in the past, IMO.
