some have never played at any organized level and don't have a good feel for what contact affects play and what contact doesn't. And in addition to that, many simply don't have great judgement in making calls and blow the whistle on just about anything that "looks like an infraction". In addition, some with big egos seem to believe "they are the show. That's the mediocre officials and there seems to be quite a few of them out there these days.

However, there are a lot of really good officials out there too and you can easily tell who they are when they are working a game. When in the service in Europe back in the early/mid 50s, I was part of a basketball clinic team with Red Auerbach, Bob Cousy, Clair Bee and two of the top NBA officials (Sid Borgia, and John Nucatola--who later became the supervisor of NBA officials). I learned a lot about officials and officiating from those two during the two weeks clinic tour of Military bases in Europe. The down side of working that clinic was sitting at the table with all of the clinic team during dinner and trying not to inhale Auerbach's cigar smoke :-))
