Baylor didn't have West's range, but he had a great inside- outside game. I don't specifically recall about his clearing space the way your father said, but he was so athletic that he could get to his spots without much trouble. The Lakers really needed Chamberlain to have come earlier in his career. The Lakers likely would've beaten the Celtics at least once or twice during that period, but they couldn't challenge Bill Russell. Oh, I know--the Celtics had many good and a few great players (Cousy, Sam Jones, Havlicek) other than Russell, but he was the difference maker. Their perimeter defenders could gamble because Russell would be there to clean things up. He was a unique talent.
