I guess I understand, because you wouldn't have seen him play if you were born after the 60s, and even before. He had that terrible injury in 1965, and never was quite the same thereafter, though he was still one of the NBA's best. I know people say he was a forerunner of Erving and Jordan, but his game was quite different from theirs, IIRC. Sure, he was a great leaper and had a flamboyant streak, but he was also a lunchpail guy that worked hard on the glass, and at 6'5" was a force on the glass.
